Editorial
I had a dream the other night. I was in Manchester in May 1998, just prior my birth.
It wasn’t an accurate rendering, I must admit. The entire lot was cloaked in a low-poly, late 90s videogame haze as if it were some long-forgotten interactive art project. Either that or a shite mod for Grand Theft Auto.
I’d cut about scooping up cash off the street, running for buses. I dipped my hands in puddles on the pavement, amazed I could feel the wet. Amazed that, when I dropped a china plate on the ground in this unreliable, ahistorical representation of a city unmarred by skyscrapers, it would smash into pieces on the floor.
You could speak to people in this dream, every odd character you’d walk up to had entirely unique dialogue and could respond to any question you asked. For some reason – probably the underlying assumption this was a late 90s videogame – this was unbelievable. It was beyond me, awe-inspiring, that a world could be so immersive, so responsive: changeable.
Only once I’d woken up did I realise we were already there.
